FAIRS & FESTIVALS, PLAY

Rajasthan is known for its architecture, art, culture, and history. Fairs and festivals add charm and colors to the desert land of Rajasthan and offer a platform to the artists (folk singers and dancers) to reveal their talent. Besides this, the festivals and fairs of Rajasthan give travelers an opportunity to taste the lip-smacking delicacies and have a glimpse into the colorful artifacts, traditional Rajasthani attires, and various interesting competitions.

Here is the list of all the fairs and festivals that are going to take place in Rajasthan during October 2017 to March, 2018.

  1. DUSSEHRA & DIWALI

  • Celebration – 30th September to 19th October 2017
  • City – JAIPUR
  • Significance – Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil. On this day Lord Rama killed King Ravana. Diwali is celebrated as the day when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana.

How is it Celebrated?

Dussehra festival of Kota is famous in India. The residents offer their prayers to Lord Rama in colorful traditional attire. Theatrical representation of ‘Ramleela’ also takes place during this festival.  The 75-feet tall effigy of 10-headed Ravana along with effigies of his son Meghnath and brother Kumbhkarana are set on fire.

On the day of Diwali, people wear new attire, have mouth-watering feasts, exchange gifts and share sweets with friends and relatives, decorate their houses with glittering clay lamps and electric lights, and seek the divine blessings of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.


2. ADVENTURE FESTIVAL

  • Celebration – 30th Sept to 17th October 2017
  • City – KOTA
  • Significance- It is celebrated to boost tourism.

How is it Celebrated?

Many adventurous activities are organized during this festival, such as kayaking, water skiing, wind surfing, rafting, and parasailing. You can also indulge in rural excursions, trekking, gliding, and climbing.


3. MARWAR (MAAND) FESTIVAL

  • Celebration – 4th to 5th October 2017
  • City- JODHPUR
  • Significance- This annual music and dance festival is organized to commemorate the Rajputs of Rajasthan.

How is it Celebrated?

This 2-day festival pulls the tourists from across the globe. Mehrangarh Fort, Mandore, and Umaid Bhawan are used as a stage for folk dance and folk songs performances that specifically focus on the romantic lifestyle of the rulers of Rajasthan. Marwar Festival reflects the art and culture of the Marwar region.


4. PUSHKAR FAIR

  • Celebration – 28th October to 4th November 2017
  • City – PUSHKAR
  • Significance- It is an annual 5-day camel and livestock fair wherein people buy and sell livestock. Pushkar Fair is one of the largest camel fairs of the world.

How is it Celebrated?

Various competitions are organized during the fair, such as bridal competition, longest moustache, camel race, matka phod, etc. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness the carnival and craze of one of the great traditional melas.


5. MAGNETIC FIELDS AT ALSISAR MAHAL

  • Celebration – 15th to 17th December, 2017
  • City – JAIPUR
  • Significance- Magnetic Fields Festival is a musical carnival organised at the magnificent Alsisar Mahal.

How is it Celebrated?

During this 3-day festival, Alsisar Mahal is converted into pulsing, throbbing venue. It provides a platform for the Indian and international artists to present their music. Apart from wonderful music, the guests get opportunity to explore the Rajasthani culture from very close, dance under the stars, yoga and wellness, and exciting treasure hunt in the Palace.


6. WINTER FESTIVAL

  • Celebration – 29th to 30th December 2017
  • City – MOUNT ABU
  • Significance- This festival is celebrated to pay honor to the rich tradition and culture of Rajasthan.

How is it Celebrated?

Various entertainment and sporting events are organized during this festival, like poetry reading sessions, rowing competition, and kite flying. ‘Deepdaan’ ceremony takes place in the Nakki Lake during evening. The hundreds of diyas floating in the water give a mesmerizing view. The festival ends with a striking display of fireworks.


7. KITE FESTIVAL

  • Celebration – 14th January 2018
  • City – JAIPUR
  • Significance- Kite festival is celebrated on the auspicious occasion of Makar Sankranti, when the sun transits from dhanu rashi to makara rashi.

How is it Celebrated?

The sky gets covered with colorful kites of various sizes and shapes. In the evening, kites with lights in them and fireworks brighten the skyline of the city. Various Kite Clubs also organize kite flying competitions.


8. JAIPUR LITERATURE FESTIVAL

  • Celebration – 24th to 29th January, 2018
  • City- JAIPUR
  • Significance- This 5-day event is the largest free literature festival in the world.

How is it Celebrated?

The dignitaries (sports people, historians, business tycoons, etc.) and authors from across the globe, especially the South East Asian countries participate in the festival and indulge indiscussions and debates on various issues, partake in readings, and share their thoughts and ideas.


9. DESERT FESTIVAL 

  • Celebration – 29th to 31st  January 2018
  • City – JAISALMER
  • Significance- Desert Festival was commenced to attract the foreign tourists, who always wished to explore the vivid facets of Rajasthan.

How is it Celebrated?

During this 3-day festival, several cultural events and competitions such as best moustache, turban tying, camel race, etc., are organized. The festival also showcases Rajasthani folk dance and songs, presented by some of the best professionals.


10. HOLI

  • Celebration – 2nd March 2018
  • City – JAIPUR
  • Significance- Holi is a festival of colours that signifies the victory of good over evil.

How is it Celebrated?

Holi marks the end of winter and arrival of spring.The celebrations begin on the night before Holi with Holika Dahan where people perform some rituals in front of the bonfire. The next day Dhulandi or Rangwali Holi is celebrated, where people drench each other with colors, sing and dance, and share Holi delicacies.
