Imagine stepping out of a loud street and into a room that has been waiting to show you something. A heavy door swings open. You stand in a double-height lobby, and a vast painting of Shrinathji looks down from the wall, wrapped in lotus and cow motifs and a colour people here call lalee, a rosy flush. Two staircases rise on either side. The street noise drops to a murmur. Somewhere nearby, a kitchen has begun to smell of ghee and warm spice.

OVERVIEW: –

Laalee stands at 22, Lane No. 1, Gopalbari, at the edge of Jaipur’s walled city, where the city first spread beyond its four original gates. It was once a private residence and is now a nine-room boutique hotel, owned by an artist and his wife, Devyani, a chef. You can feel both of them in the house: the artist in the walls, and the chef in the food.

The style is joyfully maximalist and built around Pichwai art, the temple-cloth painting tradition of Rajasthan. Some rooms are covered floor to ceiling, hand-painted with scenes from Krishna’s story, while bedding, crockery and lamps come from Indian design brands and were made specially for the hotel. It is close to the Hawa Mahal and the bazaars, yet feels like the calmer, everyday side of Jaipur.

Is Laalee the right stay for you?

Be honest about the kind of trip you want, and you will love this place or know to look elsewhere.

Choose it if you

  • Love art, colour and rooms with a story
  • Want to be close to the old city without its traffic and dust
  • Care about food made by a chef who owns the house
Look elsewhere if you

  • Are planning a wedding or a large event
  • Need a gym, a spa, or on-site parking
  • Prefer pared-back, minimalist interiors

KEY FEATURES:

  • A Pichwai-art house. Hand-painted walls, a double-height lobby and a giant Shrinathji painting set the tone.
  • Nine rooms and suites. Small enough that the team knows your name and your tea.
  • A rooftop suite. With its own private terrace and a cityscape painted on the wall by the owner.
  • A plunge pool with jacuzzi jets. Set among trees, with an alfresco dining space beside it.
  • A chef-led kitchen. An eight-course tasting menu and a winter thali built on family recipes.
  • A library bar and coffeeshop. Italian espresso by day, a quiet drink by night.
  • Candlelit terraces. Rose petals, lanterns and live Manganiyar music in the evenings.
  • Close to the sights. The Hawa Mahal, City Palace and Jantar Mantar are all within easy reach.
  • Intimate celebrations only. With nine rooms and no event spaces, Laalee suits anniversaries and small gatherings. It is not a wedding venue.

FACILITIES: –

Rooms (No. of Rooms: 9)

Laalee is intimate by design, with seven rooms and two suites in a restored family home. Most rooms look alike in layout, while the paintings differ, and some are covered in Pichwai art from floor to ceiling. Bathrooms are compact, and there is no freestanding tub, so come for the walls and the welcome, not for the bathroom. Wi-Fi and a local-cuisine breakfast are included. Ask yourself which room you would wake up in.

Deluxe Room King or twin- A comfortable city-view room with a king bed or two singles, and hand-painted walls. Choose it for a well-priced stay in a house full of art. (32 sq m about 350 sq ft)

Superior Suite King bed- A suite with more space to sit and spread out, still with a city view. Choose it for longer stays. (42 sq m about 450 sq ft)

Premium Studio Suite King bed- The largest category in the house, with a generous layout and a city view. Choose it for celebrations and lazy mornings. (77 sq m about 825 sq ft)

Rooftop Suite Private terrace- The one room that breaks the pattern, with a private terrace above the city. Choose it for sunrise coffee and starlit evenings.

Pool & Spa

The plunge pool is the garden’s quiet centrepiece, with jacuzzi jets, shade from trees and an alfresco dining space beside it. It is a seasonal outdoor pool, so ask about winter when you book. After a morning in the bazaars, a slow float here is the most restful hour of the day.

You should know before you book that Laalee does not list a spa. The wellbeing here comes through meditation rituals and slow, unhurried evenings instead.

EXPLORE:

The hotel offers a short, thoughtful list of experiences, and they all draw on the house itself:

  • Pichwai painting sessions. Sit down with a brush and learn the art that covers the walls around you.
  • Rajasthani cooking classes. Learn the dishes you have been eating, from a chef who knows them by heart.
  • Curated heritage walks. Step out into the old city with a plan and a story.
  • Meditation rituals. Begin or end the day with stillness.
  • Manganiyar music evenings. Live folk music on candlelit terraces, with petals scattered for the occasion.
  • The library lounge. A cosy room for a book, a coffee or an afternoon with nothing in it.

FOOD & DRINKS: –

This is the part of Laalee that people write home about. The kitchen belongs to Devyani, a chef, and the menu leans on fresh local produce, much of it from the owners’ garden. You may eat by the pool, in the dining room, on the terrace or in the coffeeshop, depending on the hour and your mood.

THE DINING ROOM

An indoor dining room, with an alfresco space by the pool and a rooftop terrace with city views for warmer evenings. The cooking reimagines family classics, with Kayastha favourites such as gram-flour samosas and crispy jalebis. It sits beside an eight-course tasting menu that plays with Italian and Lebanese ideas, and a winter thali drawn from the chef’s grandmother’s recipes.

Must-try dish: The winter thali, built on family recipes. For a longer evening, book the eight-course tasting menu. Finish with the crispy jalebis.
Must-try drink: Start with the espresso from the Milan-made machine.
THE LIBRARY BAR

A small, book-lined room for an evening drink, tucked beside the lounge. It is the easy place to sit when you are not ready to go to bed.

THE COFFEESHOP

Coffee here comes from an Italian espresso machine made in Milan, and it is as good as any in the city. Come in the morning for a cup and a snack before you head out to the bazaars.

Note: Check-in is from 3 pm to 10 pm, and check-out is at 11 am. After-hours check-in is not available. Menus change with the season, so ask the team what is new.

LOCATION: –

Laalee is at 22, Lane No. 1, Gopalbari, Jaipur 302001. The hotel does not offer parking.

  • By Air- Jaipur International Airport is a drive of about 28 minutes. Book a prepaid taxi or an app cab straight to the lane.
  • By Rail- Jaipur Junction is listed as a short walk of around 15 minutes, and the metro is about nine minutes on foot. If you are carrying luggage, a quick cab ride is easier. Confirm walking route with hotel
  • By Road- Gopalbari sits at the edge of the walled city, so you reach it by the main road and then a short lane. Use a cab or app taxi, as there is no parking at the hotel. The Hawa Mahal and the old bazaars are easy to reach from here.

On your last morning, take your coffee up to the terrace and look at the painted cityscape on the wall, then at the real one beyond it. You will find yourself comparing them, and deciding that the owner got the light just right.

Which painted room would you choose? Tell us in the comments, and share this guide with the person you would bring along.
