Think back to the last time you arrived somewhere and felt, within a minute, that you had come to the right place. Now let Jaipur do that for you. A scooter horn, a temple bell, the sweet smoke of someone’s first chai. You turn off the main road of Johri Bazaar into a lane too narrow for cars, and the noise folds away behind you. A carved door opens. There is cool air, rose-pink plaster, the scent of fresh flowers, and a courtyard that seems to have been waiting for you since breakfast.

OVERVIEW: –

The Johri occupies Lal Haveli, a 19th-century mansion that once belonged to a prominent Jaipur family. It stands in the old jewellers’ quarter, a short walk from the City Palace, Hawa Mahal and Jantar Mantar, and it opened its doors to guests around the turn of 2021. Abhishek Honawar, the restaurateur behind 28 Kothi, and Siddharth Kasliwal, from a ninth-generation family of Jaipur jewellers, created it together.

New York designer Naina Shah shaped the interiors with a light hand. Pichwai paintings hang beside antique furniture, scalloped arches frame the courtyard, and every suite carries the colour of a gem. You will feel that you are a guest in someone’s home rather than a number on a booking. The hotel holds a MICHELIN Key, and its restaurant has been named in the Condé Nast Traveller Top Restaurant Awards and listed in the World’s 50 Best Discovery.

Is The Johri the right stay for you?

Be honest with yourself about the kind of trip you want, and you will love this place or know to look elsewhere.

Choose it if you

  • Want to be inside the old city, on foot to the palaces and bazaars
  • Love small, personal hotels more than grand resorts
  • Enjoy vegetarian food that is thoughtful and seasonal

Look elsewhere if you

  • Need a swimming pool or a gym
  • Want a car right at the door
  • Need non-vegetarian dining on site

KEY FEATURES:

  • A haveli in the walled city. You sleep inside Jaipur’s UNESCO-listed old city, with the bazaars at your doorstep.
  • Suites named for gems. Ruby, sapphire, pearl, emerald, and gold set the mood of each room.
  • A centre-stage courtyard. Suites overlook it, and breakfast is served there in the morning light.
  • An award-winning vegetarian kitchen. Seasonal Indian food built on local, organic produce.
  • Pukhraj Lounge. Hand-painted walls of Rajasthan’s wildlife, high chai in the afternoon and cocktails after dark.
  • A private Ganesha temple. Daily puja and aarti, a tradition that is a century old.
  • A jewellery studio. Open on request, in the very bazaar that gave the hotel its name.
  • A rooftop terrace. Yoga at dawn, sundowners at dusk, the city spread below you.

FACILITIES: –

ROOMS (No. of Rooms- 8):

The Johri keeps its numbers small on purpose, and you will notice it from the moment you arrive. It is an all-suite property of eight suites around the courtyard, each named for a precious stone. Inside, expect marble floors, painted arches, a dressing room, a generous shower, soundproofed windows and free Wi-Fi. There are no televisions in the rooms. That leaves your evenings free for books, tea and the rooftops.

As you read, ask yourself which suite is yours.

Manak Ruby- Dusty-rose walls with candy-cane details, like the inside of a jewel box. Choose it if you love colour.

Neelam Sapphire- Pale-blue walls, black-and-white columns, antique tiger-shaped chairs and a hanging love seat to sway on. Choose it for a romantic stay.

Moti Pearl- Ivory tones and a private verandah on the roof terrace, made for morning tea in silence. Choose it for solitude.

Panna Emerald- Pastoral frescoes on the walls, as if a Rajasthani miniature had been enlarged around your bed. Choose it if you love art.

Sona Gold- Warm amber tones and ornate cornices that catch the lamplight. Choose it for an evening of quiet glow.

Firoza, Moonga & Sunela- Three further suites in the same gem-named tradition, also overlooking the courtyard. Ask the team about their character when you book.

Pool & Spa

You should know before you book that The Johri does not have a swimming pool. What it offers is quieter. A small treatment room provides Ayurvedic massage, detox treatments and reflexology, and the hands that work on you know exactly where a day of walking the bazaars has left its mark. You will emerge slow, warm and faintly scented with herbs, ready for the rooftop and a drink.

EXPLORE:

Then there are the experiences inside the property that make the stay feel like yours alone:

  • Rooftop yoga. Greet the sun on the terrace while Jaipur wakes, one temple bell at a time.
  • The private Ganesha temple. Join the daily puja and aarti in a house shrine tended for a hundred years.
  • The jewellery studio. Visit on request and watch stones become heirlooms, in the quarter where gem-cutting is a family trade.
  • Rooftop sundowners. Drinks arranged on the terrace as the walls turn rose and then violet.
  • Courtyard breakfast. An organic vegetarian spread under open sky.
  • Curated city experiences. The team can arrange a dawn trip to the Phool Mandi flower market, a desert excursion or a leopard-spotting outing.

FOOD & DRINKS: –

Everything served at The Johri is vegetarian, and you will not miss a thing. This is Jaipur’s walled city on a plate: light, spiced curries, kebabs, saffron, ghee and seasonal vegetables that arrived at the market that morning.

THE JOHRI RESTAURANT:

A seasonal, ever-changing menu of modern Rajasthani and Indian dishes, cooked with local organic produce and served in the haveli’s rose-lit rooms. The kitchen has been recognised by Condé Nast Traveller and the World’s 50 Best Discovery list, and the menu follows the market.

Operational Hours: Breakfast 8–11 am · Lunch 1–5 pm · Dinner 7–11 pm ·

Must-try dish: The jackfruit nihari, a rich, slow-cooked stew in which jackfruit stands in for the traditional mutton. Pair it with the palak chaat, crisp spinach under cool yoghurt and tamarind. Finish with gold-leaf gulab jamun or black-plum kulfi.

Must-try drink: Nazariya, a Negroni lifted with watermelon, vermouth, and bitters.

JOHRI & SONS BAR:

The restaurant’s own bar is where your evening begins. More than fifteen cocktails, created by the Countertop duo, play with Indian and Rajasthani flavours, spices and herbs, with Stranger & Sons as the house gin.

Operational Hours: Only in the evening

Must-try cocktail: Sukoon, a cool blend of vodka, chamomile tea, honey, Sauvignon Blanc, sparkling wine, cucumber and citrus. It tastes like an exhale.

PUKHRAJ LOUNGE:

A hushed, guests-only room with hand-painted murals of Rajasthan’s flora and fauna. In the afternoon, it serves high chai, a ritual of tea and bite-sized savouries. After sunset, it becomes an intimate cocktail bar, with house favourites and martinis, and your own bespoke drink if the in-house mixologist is on hand to learn your palate.

Operational Hours: High chai 4–5:30 pm · Evenings

Must-try: The high chai, taken slowly among the painted wildlife, followed by a martini once the lamps are lit.

NOTE: Room service runs from 8 am to 11:30 pm. Menus and cocktails change with the seasons, so ask the team what is new when you arrive.

LOCATION: –

The Johri sits at 3950, MSB Ka Rasta, Johri Bazaar, Ghat Darwaza, Jaipur 302003. The lane is too narrow for cars, so you leave the car on the main Johri Bazaar road and walk the last stretch. Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy it. It is your first taste of the old city.

  • By Air- Jaipur International Airport is about 12 km away, a drive of roughly 30 minutes depending on traffic. Ask the hotel about an airport transfer, or take a prepaid taxi to the Johri Bazaar main road.
  • By Rail – Jaipur Junction railway station is a quick 15-minute drive. Trains from Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, and Udaipur serve Jaipur well.
  • By Road- Jaipur is roughly 270 km from Delhi, about five hours by car on the national highway. Drive to Johri Bazaar and park on the main road, then walk into the lane. Within the old city, auto-rickshaws and app cabs are the easiest way to cross town.

When you leave, go in the early light. The lane is quiet, the marigold sellers are laying out their baskets, and the pink of the walls looks softer than you remember. You will find yourself turning back for one last look at the door.
