Rajasthan: The Rainbow State

RELAX

June 27,2019

Arushi Jain

Human eyes are attentive to the colours around them. Colours allow eyes to focus in the jungle or makes us feel relaxed by the hues of white. Rajasthan is a state full of colours culture and rich traditions.

Below we list the most colourful places in Rajasthan which have earned colourful titles.

1.SARISKA NATIONAL PARK, ALWAR (GREEN):

Sariska National Park is the largest sanctuary, with an area spreading more than 800 square km comprising Aravali Hills, grasslands, dry forest, & rocky landscapes of Rajasthan. It is the first reserve in the world to have successfully relocated the Great Bengal Tigers.

2. JODHPUR (THE BLUE CITY):

The second largest city in Rajasthan, once the capital of the kingdom of Marwar is also known as the ‘Sun City’ due to the extreme temperature throughout the year. There is no definite reason for why it is called the Blue city. Some people say it’s because the Indigo hue keeps the houses cool, some say blue colour (a mixture of copper sulphate & limestone) helps deter termites which historically damaged the town. The most believed reason is that it used to reflect the social status of the Brahmin community (a higher caste) and differentiate from the lower castes.

3. UDAIPUR (THE WHITE CITY):

This beautiful city is also known as the lake city because its surrounded by seven man-made lakes. It is called the white city because of the construction of Rajput style palaces and forts done by using White Marble and Granite by the rulers. The most beautiful example of this is the City Palace and the Lake Palace which is now a luxury hotel.

4. JAISALMER (THE GOLDEN CITY):

It is at the far end of the Thar Desert and is the centre for nomadic desert culture. It is famous for Jain temples and Sand dunes. Jaisalmer fort is the world’s only living fort, as nearly a quarter of the old city’s population still lives within. The city is referred as the golden city because of the yellow sandstone used throughout the architecture of the town and the fort. Another reason is the golden sand which surrounds the city.

5. BIKANER (THE RED CITY):

This is a hidden treasure of Rajasthan. The Lalgarh Palace (Laxmi Niwas Palace) and Junagarh Fort were constructed by using red dhulmera sandstone procured from a local quarry. There are many other old structures in the city which have been made using the same stone, due to this Bikaner is referred to as the red city.

6. JAIPUR (THE PINK CITY):

In 1876 Prince Albert came to India and to impress him then Maharaja Sawai Ram Singh II painted the whole city terracotta pink as the pink colour used to represent the welcoming & spirit of hospitality. Prince Albert was very much impressed by the pink avatar, he gave the nickname ‘Pink City’. Till date, it’s a law that the old city must be uniformly painted in the same shade of terracotta pink.
